Planning and Qualifying for Finance Jobs

Finance is a fascinating subject. It is interesting because it helps make sense out of what is happening to your money or anybody’s money. It deals with what every one dreams about, money. It is needed everywhere and anytime; everywhere because no matter big or small private or public every one needs to know about money and its management; anytime because finance jobs are immune to recession. We may be short of money in recession, but we still need to manage what we have and more carefully than in prosperity. Aptitude for career in Finance Jobs

You need not be an extrovert but you must be hard working, comfortable with numbers and analysis. You should be reasonably good in mathematics and statistics for advanced financial modeling jobs. You should be very patient, meticulous and must have high levels of integrity. Your communication must be clear.

Qualifications for Finance Jobs

Jobs in finance are diverse in nature from simple accounting jobs to corporate financial budgeting, planning and strategy formulation. There are many routes to getting qualified in finance. One can start with a bachelor’s degree in commerce or bachelors degree in business administration with major in finance, and further add qualifications like Certified Public Accountant (known as CPA, USA), Chartered Accountant (C.A in India and UK and many other countries).

These are offered through professional institutes and are not offered as courses in universities and colleges. Normally article clerk training is to be done in parallel under a qualified practicing chartered accountant during the study to get the practical knowledge in auditing.

Certified Public Accountant

US CPA is a board exam offered by each state. There are currently 54 offices where you can apply. The minimum requirement is 4 year degree qualification with 150 semester hours. CPA exam cannot be taken outside USA. CA from India is not considered as equivalent. Exceptions is made for special examination for Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountant (CICA), Institute of Chartered Accountant in Australia(ICAA), CPA Australia, Institute of Chartered Accountancy in Ireland, Instituto Mexicano De Contadores Publicos (IMCP). Cost and works accountant is also another certificate program that gives background in cost accounting and managerial accounting.

Masters in Business administration in finance is a way to get good knowledge in financial planning and strategy. Chartered and cost accountants and CPAs also prefer to do this as additional higher qualification to supplement their accounting background with managerial knowledge.

Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) is also available in many countries to do on a distance education pattern. The institutes that offer these certificate programs also offer coaching as a part of the program .

There many masters programs in finance and doctoral programs in finance offered by the universities around the globe that are on the same pattern of MBA except they are intensive on finance and do not get into general management as in the MBA programs.

It is a common practice to get all these qualifications to gain full confidence and overall competence in the finance. For most finance jobs one of the qualifications is adequate but having all of them or most of the qualification is sure to put one on the top of the Finance jobs in the corporate world.

The good news is that with careful planning it is possible to work for more than one degree, diploma or certificate at a time.

Finance Jobs Are Diverse and Wide Spread in Many Sectors

The simplest of the finance jobs are jobs like analyst and accounts clerk which don’t really need more than undergraduate qualification.

Corporate and Institutional Finance jobs can start at fiancé officer or finance manger level and end in Vice President Finance or Director Finance. The top level jobs carry plum salary packages in the corporate sector.

Banks are big employers of finance graduates. Masters of Business Administration degree and certificate holders from top institutes are paid some of the highest salaries by the multinational banks. Banks offer jobs in investment banking, merchant banking, personal banking and wealth management, commercial banking, export finance, equity research, financial operations, taxation, venture capital, credit management, risk management and corporate finance and operations.

Broking organizations like stock brokers and mutual fund organizations need finance graduates badly. Fund management, equity research, derivatives management are growing areas and will continue to grow for a longtime.

Leasing and finance companies area also big employers of finance graduates, Due to the spreading of leasing and finance into consumer markets from industrial equipment leasing because of car and other consumer durable leasing this sector is bound to require many people.

Insurance is a growing sector that needs finance graduates. While selling insurance can be managed by marketing people developing new and innovative products for corporate sector is a challenge that needs the involvement of finance graduates.
